![]() ![]() ![]() Many of the action setpieces are derivative, to be sure, with echoes of everything from Transformers: Dark of the Moon to Terminator Genisys, but they’re effective nevertheless. Meanwhile, director Wes Ball brings the right level of energy, at least to the second half. Character actors collecting paychecks in YA adaptations are nothing new a friend once called the Harry Potter series “a retirement plan for the Royal Shakespeare Company.” But they’re especially welcome in this case, because they make up for the film’s thin script and the younger actors’ mostly anonymous performances by letting their own personas fill the void. So besides the aforementioned Tudyk and Pepper, Giancarlo Esposito shows up as a wasteland pirate, and Lili Taylor as a resistance leader. (“This one’s got green aphrodisiacs, zombies on chains, and Alan Tudyk in velvet.”) As our heroes discover others out there in the Scorch, the story loosens up and starts to have fun, with admirable assists from a series of terrific character actors. We get a demented rave that would make Saturday Night Live’s Stefon proud. We get underground, rat-eating, mutant root zombies. And so, The Scorch Trials starts to peter out under the weight of its meaninglessness and sheer unoriginality.Įssentially, The Scorch Trials makes up for the humdrum YApocalypse of its first half by going a little bonkers in its second. O’Brien, who gave Thomas a likable desperation in the first film, here goes a little too often to his signature move: running with his arms flailing and his mouth wide open. There’s very little development to these characters, which is probably okay for those who remember the original film well, not so much for those of us who don’t. It’s an all-of-the-above sci-fi dystopia. (Environmental devastation? Check.) And more zombies. It’s a deadly but thoroughly predictable postapocalyptic landscape: The rivers have become deserts. They flee WCKD and head out into the Scorch, the aforementioned wasteland. (Human experimentation? Check.) Regardless, Thomas and his pals don’t want to wait to find out. Occasionally, some of the kids are rounded up by WCKD and taken away - we’re not sure where to. (Militaristic, fascist plutocrats? Check.) They’re housed in a massive complex, where they join lots of other kids there were apparently many different mazes. Then they’re whisked away by WCKD (World Catastrophe Killzone Department), the mysterious organization responsible for putting them in the maze in the first place. As the film starts, our protagonist from the first film, Thomas (Dylan O’Brien), and his companions Newt (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), Minho (Ki Hong Lee), Frypan (Dexter Darden), Winston (Alexander Flores), and Teresa (Kaya Scodelario, the lone girl in their crew), get a brief glimpse of the wasteland that the Earth has become. Now the first of those sequels is here, and for much of its first half, The Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials fulfills all of our worst fears about where this story would go (especially for those of us who haven’t read the original James Dashner YA novels). The stage was set for what would surely be a bunch of world-building, overinsistent sequels with little of the lean charm of the original. At the end of the film, our heroes stepped out into a fiery apocalypse, with futuristic soldiers and helicopters and whatnot all around the place. But then The Maze Runner went and did something stupid: It let them escape from the maze. In it, a group of amnesiac young men were trapped in an enclosed glade, with a mysterious and deadly maze as their sole means of escape - an intriguing dysbropia with an existential spin. Last year’s The Maze Runner was a pleasant surprise - a young-adult adaptation that refused to overexplain itself, letting our uncertainty about its bewildering futuristic world mirror the characters’ own. ![]() ![]() ![]() Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm ContradanceWaltz Ev 120 Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm ContradanceReelSwing Sw 135 Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm ContradanceReelSlightSwingFast Ev16 130 Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm ContradanceReelSlightSwing Sw16 120 Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm ContradanceJig68 Sw 120 Guitar, Acoustic, Rhythm Strathspey Sw 120 ![]() Guitar, Acoustic, Rhythm ContradanceWaltzLoose Sw 120 Guitar, Acoustic, Rhythm ContradanceWaltzCrosspick Ev 120 Guitar, Acoustic, Rhythm ContradanceReelSwing Sw 135 Guitar, Acoustic, Rhythm ContradanceReelSlightSwingFast Ev16 130 Guitar, Acoustic, Rhythm ContradanceReelSlightSwing Sw16 120 Guitar, Acoustic, Rhythm ContradanceJig68 Sw 120 Note: This RealTracks Set requires Band-in-a-Box ® 2023 or higher. While the game allows for one person to control both kiwis (either switching between the two or controlling both together), neither prove particularly effective resulting in a far more cumbersome experience. These curveballs help keep KeyWe fresh and engaging whilst disguising the fact you’re still at the end of the day performing the same handful of tasks. In one modified task, sand fills the warehouse floor causing the kiwis to sink when walked on while a number of others see bugs flying around that block the visibility of vital information and even move things about (rather annoyingly). Spread out across three seasons (starting in the blazing heat of the summer and ending during the snowy months of winter), tasks will quickly see new twists added that prove a chaotic mixture of frustration, hilarity and challenge. Sending out crates for example involves typing the correct four-digit location code, slapping any stickers on (if it contains something heavy, fragile or perishable), carrying a lid over to the crate with a crane and then finally sending it off to the right place. ![]() Each offers something unique, some even requiring a number of varying steps to be taken before completion. Building sentences with stickers meanwhile is made tougher thanks to, once again, these stickers being scattered all about the place with some even on moving objects. Of course, none of these are as simple as they initially sound, the typing of messages, for example, done by running and hopping around an office and butt stomping on keys littered everywhere. You’ll either be typing messages on a telegraph machine, labelling and sending off crates, piecing together sentences with stickers or sorting and sending out customer’s mail. These tasks tend to fall into one of four different types. After a brief tutorial that sees you learning the basic movements of Jeff and Debra, it’s then off to take on your first proper assignment. It’s hard to deny the cuteness of the two, especially as you watch them hop around a human-sized working environment picking up things with their beaks. KeyWe sees one or two players take on the role of Jeff and Debra, two kiwi birds who have just started their new jobs at the Bungalow Basin Telepost Office. KeyWe is very much another one of those types of games, placing a firm emphasis on teamwork and keeping calm under high-pressure situations. In Overcooked 2, however, as you find yourselves hopping between moving trucks, dashing to cutting and cooking stations scattered in the most unhelpful of places or even slipping your way across ice, these simple errands suddenly become far more difficult and chaotic. Cooking a burger for example – I think we can all agree – hardly requires much more thinking than, cook the patty and place it between two buns. ![]() The brilliance of games like Overcooked 2 and Moving Out is in their ability to take otherwise fairly straightforward and ordinary tasks and turn them into something far more exciting and with an interesting emphasis on teamwork. ![]() ![]() ![]() Ultimately, she was succeeded by Justice Samuel Alito and officially retired on January 31, 2006. The missions have an authentic edge of risk here, because of course you get attached to these toy soldiers, but if someone dies they’re dead – and all that investment of time and resource goes with them. Their name and appearance can be edited, an important touch, because over multiple missions your troops will level up into various classes (sniper, scout, etc) and become much more efficient operators – mentally stronger, more health, better shots and various abilities. XCOM’s troops are each a randomly generated personality with their own name and looks, and they are a valuable commodity indeed. Nowhere is this more obvious than in your soldiers. ![]() Mismanage your base in XCOM 2 and it will go under by degrees and collapse. Many games that incorporate a meta-structure of base building silently have a safety net, meaning that the base gets better over time regardless of your involvement and it’s hard to screw it up. Supplies and personnel really are precious, and making bad calls – like setting your scientist to work for 14 days on magnetic weapons, when you have other projects that will come to fruition much quicker – can you leave your operation feeling lopsided for weeks. This side of XCOM 2 is straightforward, a case of making strategic choices rather than actually running a base, but the scarcity of resources and the impact of your decisions give it huge influence over the campaign. If you just race up the weapon and armour tech trees as fast as possible, you’ll be ignoring soft buffs to the base’s efficiency and capabilities which may have a bigger payoff in the long term. It makes every decision an important one, and comes to define your tactics in a wider sense. Managing the base is a matter of choosing priorities – there are a number of specific rooms covering science research, weapon production, and so on, but each can only work on a single project and you’ll always have a big list. XCOM 2 features many new enemy types, including the ‘faceless’ creature seen here, which can impersonate humans. There’s a shimmering effect when you enter the map room, where a 3D globe moves towards the screen and breaks apart into constituent particles as it does so, a sight so beautiful you just want to stick it on repeat with a Pink Floyd album. The latter is an incredibly lavish production of what is basically a side-on 2D view of an ant mound, which zooms in and out of the rooms as you click through them. XCOM 2 splits between missions on the ground, where you control a group of soldiers (initially four, soon six) and fight aliens/save civilians/steal technology, and the XCOM base itself. Here the restrictions are as tight as they were but, when you’re scrabbling every day just to find supplies and keep out of sight, the whole setup makes much more sense. At once the scenario fits beautifully with how XCOM 2’s mix of turn-based strategy and base-building works – in the original game you apparently had every nation on Earth’s backing, but could still run out of doctors or scientists or troopers. The tutorial establishes this new XCOM as a ragtag rebel group, abandoned by most of its old allies (who have signed up with the alien rulers) and lacking leadership. ![]() |
